Port Club Tawny

£30.00

Club Blend: Tony’s Tawny

Named after Churchill’s co-founder and legendary port raconteur Anthony Graham, this unique aged tawny was blended and bottled exclusively for port club. Averaging 17 years in French oak barrel, this wizened wood-aged wonder harkens back to an earlier time before IVDP regulations required 10 year increments on aged tawnies and when port blenders had a bit more latitude to express themselves with style. Fresh like a 10 year old but muscled like a 20, this port represents what Antony has long espoused to be the true glory of tawny, being equally comfortable at a black tie soiree and off-road picnic. Drink, savour, and share with generosity.

How to talk about it:

  • Colour: Amber and copper with red brick hue
  • Nose: Hazelnuts and roasted almonds
  • Palate: Smooth and elegant with flavours of toffee and cherries

Fun Fact: In order to be classified as an aged tawny by the IVDP, ports must have an average of either 10, 20, 30, or 40 years in barrel.  While we think of this as the norm today, the rule was instituted to bring more structure and commercial legitimacy to the category. Previously, aged ports were more flexible, and each port shipper would have their own propriety blends that would stand as their signature in the market.
